An Alternative to Statecraft. Should Diplomacy adapt to a New World Environment? -

1 October 2010, London:

The Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung in cooperation with the London School of Economics (LSE) organised a panel discussion entitled 'An Alternative to Statecraft. Should diplomacy adapt to a new world environment?'.

The aim of this event was to discuss the role of diplomacy in the 21st century and its future development in the light of the European External Action Service (EEAS) - one of the major institutional innovations created by the Lisbon Treaty. In the course of the panel discussion, Dr Mary Martin (LSE) presented thoughts on the potential role of the EEAS to promote human security in overseas missions. An assessment of the challenges the EEAS might pose to national diplomatic services was then given by the Costa Rican Ambassador Pilar Saborio and the German Ambassador Georg Boomgaarden.
